Wireless router?

i have a question about wireless routers. there are two laptops in my house and a desktop. how does the router work, do you just take it outta the box and turn it on and then the computers are connected? and i dont know about the desktop, how would the desktop run off of the router? do the wireless routers come with outlets to plug ethernet cords in them for desktops. i wanna get one but i dont know what else i may or may not have to also buy with it|||First get a linksys wireless g 4 port router its the easyest to set up, desktop plugs in the back with a ethernet cable (it does not turn the router off), the laptop will connect wirelessly





The router will only work if you have high speed internet (no dial up).


Make sure u change the password of the router so that others do not go in and change the settings.|||Most wireless routers do have some connections for wired machines. Usually 4 or so. A router just goes between the modem and your machines and "routes" internet traffic as needed. They all come with a setup guide to get your started.





Basically all you do is log in to the routers setup page (use a web browser from a wired machine) setup the connection type for cable, dsl, etc. Setup your wireless -- you need to enter an SSID (which identifies your router make it whatever you want dont keep the default) enter an encryption key (dont run without it!) and then connect all your laptops using the wireless adapters (hopefully already with the laptops. if not you will need a couple)|||i know that you can connect the wireless router to your desktop via a wired connection and make the settings from the desktop. then as long as the signal is up you can use the wireles adapters in the laptops to connect them to the network.|||The routers work by directing the signal from your cable modem or dsl line and distributing to your computers. They usually have 4 ethernet plugs and wireless signal as well. Depending on how close the two desktops are you can plug them directly into the router and it will work out of the box. The only tricky part is when you want to use the wireless as that takes a little bit more to setup but the guides they give you work very well. If the desktops are further apart I would suggest you buy a wireless card for one of them the best bet is to get the same brand as the router so they speak with eachother better. Naturally you can run your laptop from either the wired port or connect wirelessly. I have the same type of set up at home. 1 desktop wired to the router, one wireless and the laptop wireless too.
