Wireless router?

I have mediacom for my internet and TV. I had a desktop and so i had a a cable running plugged in to it via a modem. well know i have a laptop and i want to go wireless. my friend told me i could get a wireless router. i called best buy and they told me i had to have a desk top to hook it up to so i can also use it for my laptop. while i am do know know a whole lot about computers, but that does not sound right to me. my computer does have a built in wireless card. so what do i need to go wireless? can i just hook up the router to my modem? thanks in advance!|||That's bull. Go get a linksys wireless router.|||Yes, absolutely. Get the router, hook the cable that is going to the desktop to your router. You will need to get another ethernet cable to run from the router to the desktop.

There's a little bit of configuration that you will need to do on the router to get it to work with your laptop. Just follow the instructions and you'll be up and running in minutes.

As the previous post stated, get the Linksys wireless router. It sells at Best Buy for $49.99. Get the ethernet cable as well when you're there, a 6ft cable should be sufficient.

Good luck! Email if you need assistance!|||Yes. you'll use your hard wired pc to set up the router firmware. the router will come with a setuo disk that you will run with your hard wired pc. once you have everything set up you'll need to put in your WEP key into the laptop so it can connect the the internet.

you can however use your laptop with an ethernet cable to the router to do the same thing. Once again...when you have completed the setup you can setup your wireless on your laptop.|||Start Here. Tutorial

Wireless Router?

I have 2 questions

Firstly, would I be able to download stuff through another person's wireless router if i was in range?

Secondly, I am just out of range from the 'unsecured' wireless router, is there any way for me to boost the strength of the connection?|||To answer your question per se, ethical considerations aside, one will be able to download files using a wireless signal from an unsecured wireless network. As for extending signals, repeaters were meant to do that.|||You could put another router to act as a repeater to boost the strength of that wifi network.|||You could hide a Wireless repeater in their yard, lol. Seriously, don't do that.|||as long ats its unsecure its fine. with a super g adapter with smart antena technology would be the perfect antena.

have fun.

Wireless router?

How do I determine what type of wireless router I need for my apartment. I need it to work from one room to another and I what do I need to get for my computer to make it work?|||i'm sure most anything you get would cover your apartment assuming its an average 800-1000 sq ft or so. You can get a linksys from walmart for 39 bucks or so.

the computer closest to the DSL / phone jack will probably use ethernet and most PCs have an ethernet card but double check. The other PC will need a wireless adapter. you can get a USB wireless adapter for about 29 bucks at walmart.|||need to check out your computer make sure it has a lan connection( like a big phone jack ) or a USB port,,

Beldin or Linksys wireless routers at walmart are fine, but you need to little receiver for the remote computer,, Beldin is cheaper and easier to use, has security too,|||the would depend on what range between computers you'll have. usually most wireless routers operates between 100-300 feet.|||Go to staples or computer store tell them what you have and they will be happy to help you. I have the Linksys model wrt54g wireless router and the Linksys pci adapter model wmp54g. Works great. We run 3 computers in the house which is as big as most apartments.

Wireless router?

I think one of my neighbours is tapping into my internet connection through my wireless router, how can I stop this from happening|||Turn on the wireless security, WEP or WAP.

See your routers manual for instructions.|||you should have a password set up on it, so that only you can get on to it.|||man the same thing happened to my parents when we got ours but you can go to the router through internet explorer/firefox and go to the router adres provided with the instructions and their is a seting to add a password

Enjoy (put me as your best answer)|||Most routers have wireless security installed in them and all you have to do is turn that on. It will require a "password" or passphrase in order to connect once that is activated. This will help keep them out. Just log into you router and activate the service. You will then have to enter that passphrase on your devices to connect them to your router.

You can also activate MAC addressing filters which will allow only authorized cards to connect (each wireless card has a very specific MAC address) You can read these from your routers status pages usually.

You can also in most cases, change your SSID to something unusual and then turn off the broadcast. You will no longer see your router as available so you will have to key in that SSID to connect from your machines.|||Secure your wireless internet connection.

- See the router's manual or, if you don't have it hand, look it up on the manufacturer's website.

- Access your router's interface (there must be an IP address that you have to type into your browser's address line), look for Wireless settings or security and choose WPA-PSK security and add a password.

- To get connected to your wireless router you will have to type in the same password when you try to access your own WI-FI network.|||1.) disable SSID broadcast

2.) change network SID

3.) enable network security, put a password....

4.) find out MAC addresses from your computers and let only those computers access the AP or Router....

I bought a wireless router and I have a wireless laptop, how do I connect the two?

I have a modem that is connected to my laptop. My laptop has wireless ability, I purchased a wireless router but it looks like I need to connect it to a desktop to make it work. Is this true?|||No, that's not true at all. Just connect your modem to the router (not your laptop), set up your router to broadcast a wireless network (check the manual), and then your laptop should be able to pick up the signal from the router. It's quite simple, and most routers come with decent setup guides.|||Most of the routers come with the software which you can run to make them broadcast the network with a name...initially as there's no connection to the router you will need to connect any computer wired to the router and run the software(or do the manual settings for your brand) and then disconnect the laptop.

You'll find the network with the name you gave it on the available networks on your laptop. Now, Just connect to it.|||Yes, that is true. Unless, of course, you can find someone that hasn't put a password in their router.

When using a wireless router for a zune hd, do you have to keep paying every month?

You have a zune hd and wireless router, and you want internet for the zune hd. Can you use your wireless router you already bought, no extra charge, or do you have to keeping paying for the internet connection? Any suggestions are okay.|||the only thing you have to pay is the internet bill every month...other than that, it is free.|||no payment whatsoever to use a router. also belkin is pretty good so get that and put a wpa2 security on it.

What is the difference between a Wireless Cable Modem and a Wireless Router?

I'm getting cable at my house and they are giving me a self install kit that my boyfriend is going to hook up but I want wireless for my laptop. What is the difference between a Wireless Cable Modem and a Wireless Router? Can a router be plugged into a router or does a router have to be plugged into a modem or vice versa? What kind of equipment comes with a self install kit? a modem or router?|||Usually the self install kits only include a modem which is *not* wireless.

If the self install kit just has a modem, then you will need to get your own wireless router. The modem plugs into the wall, and the router plugs into the modem. The instructions for the router will show how to hook things up.

But if your self install kit really includes a wireless modem, then you don't need to buy any other equipment, the wireless modem will actually perform the functions of a modem and a wireless router all in one.|||Ask them what comes in the box.
