Will a wireless router work on its own or are other components needed?

I am interested in getting a wireless router so I don't have wires and cables all over my room. If I buy a wireless router, is that all I need to get it working or do I have to get a PCI card as well? What is a wireless USB adapter? Will that work alone with the router or just the router? Confused!!

Also what is the difference between B-G and N routers?

Thanks!|||Computer tech here.....To make this simple, What you can get, although they are not bundled but sold separately. What you can get is a wireless router, a wireless PCI card with an antenna attached for your computer and a wireless USB Adapter for your laptop (if it is an older one) if you have one as well. (Newer laptops have built-in wireless networking device and a USB Adapter is not necessary to have.) All of these must have the same codes such as "N". The best brand I recommend the most is Netgear. They are easier to hook up and use without the hassle. Linksys is not recommended because they are known to have problems to not work correctly like they should be. Hope this helps.|||The router is the transmitter. Either the PCI card or the USB Adapter (but not both - they are doing the same job) is needed as the receiver on the computer. The two pieces create the data link you require.

B - G - N are different versions of the wireless network protocol.

B is the oldest and slowest

G is newer and the the most common

N is the newest, fastest and most expensive

Your router and your receiver (PCI or USB) must use the same protocol.

If you have an N router - use an N Wireless adapter|||B-G and N are diffrent types of frequencies the router uses It shouldn't really matter because usualy everything is B-G now. You will need to buy a wireless PCI card for your desktop in order for it to receive signal. Laptops now come with built in wireless cards but if you have an old laptop you will need a Wireless card. You will need to attach the wireless router to your internet router IE: Cable Modem, DSL Modem. That should be all|||to make it simple, get a 2 in 1 router and modem
