What is the best wireless router on the market that can reach the farthest distance?

Looking for a really good wireless router that can reach up to a mile away with a good signal still. I don't even know if this is possible.|||Wifi is not designed for that kind of distance. It is purposely designed as a low power system with limited range so that many transmitters and receivers may be used in the same general area and not interfere with each other.

There is no Wifi router on the market that meets your requirements.

If you wish to discuss this project further, you will need to re-post with more specific details of what you are trying to do.

Sorry|||Not possible without external antennas, maybe amplifiers, and you would have to have line-of-sight between the 2 antennas (sites)

Only if you have clear line of sight, you can consider external antennas or access points, set up in bridging mode. That bridges the network as one "virtual" network. I use these, though I only go 400 feet:

https://www.demarctech.com/products/reli鈥?/a>

They have higher power. As well, that vendor has some external antenna/AP combinations, that eliminates the coax cable requirements (fed by power over ethernet cable).

How to set up a wireless router to a ethernet wall socket?

Ok. i moved into an apartment that offers free internet. there is no modem just a wall socket to connect an ethernet cable, thats what i'm on now. but i want to connect a wireless linksys router to it so i can go wireless on my laptop. i assume this connection is coming from a network as it is, so one concern that i have is, will my ip address change all the time and will it affect my wireless conection? and also how do i go about setting up my router?|||Well this can get a little into networking but that is not a major issue. Simply connect your computer to the outlet first, see what IP is being issued. (Click start ---%26gt;Run---%26gt;type cmd in the run line type ipconfig /all) write down the IP and gateway.

Plug your computer into the router and log on to it locally. Set it to obtain the IP automatically from the WAN/Internet. Then setup the DHCP (local settings) to use SOME OTHER IP RANGE than that issued to your computer when you connected directly.

IE if your computer shows something like.

IP 192.168.0.xx and the gateway is 192.168.0.1 or

IP 10.0.0.xx and gateway is 10.0.0.1

then set your routers DHCP range to say 192.168.1.xx just do not use the same IP ranges within both!

Once you have setup a diferent range of IP's for YOUR network just connect the cable from the etihernet port for your apartment to the WAN/Internet port of your router and you should be good to go.

This will give you another network within your apartment and will isolate your machines from the apartments network. You really don't care if the IP changes on the apartments system as long as it connects to the internet you will connect.

Works great I have done this in numerous situations.

Can i put a wireless router in a linksys router?

I have 2 xbox 360s hooked into my router, and a house computer. But we also have 2 laptops with wireless capabilities. But yes. you can buy a wireless router.... It might cost you about 60 dollers or so.|||Generally speaking yes, all you have to do is get a netgear wireless router or similar and connect it to power and connect it to the ethernet. When people get broadband in their homes they basically get what you have right now..........ethernet in the form of a modem. But most of the time they will also install and give you a wireless router which just connects to the ethernet. Just make sure you get the right router, one that just needs ethernet attachment.

However keep in mind you might still have some problems if the internet is secured, also it will not make your connection any faster and you will likely be sharing it with nearby roommates who pick up on your wireless.

I am looking at buying a wireless router mainly for playing multiplayer games between my PC and laptop. I want one that I can use in the future for broadband + more computers.

What feature on a wireless router decides how many computer can connect to it?

Thanks.|||Most machines use something called DHCP (Dynamic Host Connection Protocol) to hand out IP addresses. Typically home routers are configured to allow about 250 machines available to connect.

In practice, you need to figure out how much bandwidth one player uses, and then figure out how much bandwidth is available from your Internet Service Provider. i just got xbox live and i am trying to connect my wireless router to my main router so i dont need to be constantly moving my router. Is there a Wireless Router that you can plug up an Alltel Wireless Device too?

I have heard about Wireless Routers that you can do this. But I don't know if it is true because I tried to find them online. Can anyone help me? Supposedly you can plug it up to a Router and your whole house can get internet from that one. X-Box 360, Wii, and any other Wireless computers are supposedly able to pick it up if you have this Router.|||I don't know about Alltel, but the other major wireless carriers have a mobile hotspot device. It doesn't allow you to "plug up" a normal broadband modem to it; rather there is a broadband modem built into the device. Currently, you can connect up to five wifi devices to it.

That closest resembles what you're asking for. There is nothing that exists which match your exact description.|||i've been in this situation with an alltel phone n it sucks i no. i wanted to use other computers with the same phone. there is a solution. you need to hook the device to your computer and buy online a router that plugs into your usb. it uses the computer to get the internet and broadcasts it as a wifi signal

Most routers are preconfigured and work as soon as they are plugged in.

Plug in, all cables and power up and after a few minutes it should work, but do check the instructions if the router has been supplied by an ISP as they often provide special services which require extra drivers or software.

How do I set up a second wireless router in my home?

My family has one wireless router upstairs, but it doesn't really reach the basement very well in order to allow me to play Xbox Live. So now I have a 2nd router (Not wireless) and I plan on setting that up in the basement and connecting it to my Xbox via Ethernet. So how do I do this? I have already tried just plugging it all in and turning it on.|||No, you really can't do that. There has to be only one gateway system for your internal internet to access the outside world, and all traffic flows through that gateway. In your house, that's the wireless router. Unfortunately, wireless signals don't flow all that well vertically, which is why basement reception is so poor.

What you need is something called a repeater, also known as a range expander. You configure it and then plug it somewhere midway between the router and the basement. The repeater picks up the wireless signal, cleans it up and boosts it, and then retransmits it so you will get better reception in the basement.

We have exactly the same situation in our house, wireless upstairs and PS3 in basement, and the repeater has made an enormous difference.|||you could tap into the back of the first router or if u have a jack downstairs just plug it in there(only if your house is wired) if not try to call you cable/internet service and see what they can do

That is how the router gets its connection that it puts throught the air waves. Now I think you can get something called a bridge that will allow the connection to come downstairs. It will not have wires but google it or go to Best Buy and they will have the stuff on the site.

There is something that will work I just dont know if its called a bridge I forgot.

Can I plug my wireless router into the back of my computers ethernet port to share the Internet?

And how do i configure my computer to do so. And also my wireless router is a Netgear WGR614.|||That's how it works, YES.

However, you have to understand the order of the connections..

The MODEM gets plugged into the back of the router FIRST, into the slot marked INTERNET on the back of the router.

Then, you just run the cable that came with the router from any one of the other 4 slots on the back of the router directly to your computers

network card.

Then just run the software that came with the router from the computer the router is physically attached to.

Its pretty simple. Then, depending on whether you have a wireless router or wired router, you will set up a wireless network name an so forth.

If you are just using a wired setup, you will simply run another cable from one of the three remaining slots to your other computer.

Just remember.....the MODEM gets plugged into the slot marked INTERNET on the back of the router, and the other things such as computers, network printers and so forth go into the other slots on the back of the router.|||Connect the cable/dsl modem to the router's WAN port(sometimes named as Modem Port, internet port, Up-link port).

Then connect the router's LAN port to the computer.

Then turn off everything.

Turn on cable/dsl modem, wait few minutes until most lights show up.

Turn on the router, wait few minutes until most lights show up.

Turn on the PC.|||The router will have both wired and wireless. It's all about connecting the cables properly. There should be a wan or Internet port on the back of the router. Connect that to your modem. The port will be a port further away from the other ports. The other ports that are closer together than the one far apart will connect to the computers. That's it, it's all plug and play.

Thanks in advance!!!!!|||Wireless N router is the way to go. The G routers are getting to be quite outdated. The N has a stronger signal and runs faster, so you'll need it for your Xbox Live connection.

Also (assuming you're asking about a 360), I'd get whatever adapter you can find a good deal on...They really don't make that many to choose from, and there isn't a significant difference between them.

If you use the 2 routers change the channels so they are not the same as each other.

You must have tried moving the box to see if you can cover more house that way..

You could run Ethernet Cat5 cable from the main of the second router to one of the numbered inputs of the main router if you really have to but that's a pain and defeats the purpose of wireless anyway. You can't have two modems running at the same time on the same line|||This will not work. Wireless routers are not wireless range extenders. Plus these are not the easiest thing in the world to setup.

I recommend a powerline range extender, or just go with powerline in those spots that won't reach. Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9KWdOLgy鈥?/a>

Newegg.com bestbuy.com tirerdirect.com and buy.com sells them. Search for wireless range extender. These are the difficult ones to setup. The easy one to setup is the powerline range extender.

Or if you want, you can ditch the wireless and go with just powerline. Just go to one of those web sites and search powerline.

Will a wireless router that is hooked up to a desktop computer slow down the internet speed?

I just got a wii and i want to get internet for it. However we dont have wifi and need some way to connect it so i am looking into buying a wireless router. Since the wireless router will need to hook up to my desktop computer will that router slow down the internet on the desktop computer alot compared to the desktop being hooked up to a dsl modem?|||No, it will not slow down the internet speed if you directly connect it to a wireless router. It's basically the same thing as a normal router, except it broadcasts a wireless signal, to wireless devices.

However, while playing the Wii, or using other wireless devices that may use some bandwidth, you could notice a bit of a slow down while on the internet depending on how much bandwidth those devices are using. Regardless, I believe it would be barely noticeable, depending on how good of a DSL connection you have.|||Well if it's wired directly to the router instead of wireless. Then no.... You won't notice any difference in speed at all. Even if the desktop is connected to the router wirelessly and you are not doing anything bandwidth intensive. You wouldn't notice any change at all either.|||depending on the router speed and internet speed it should only slow slightly or not at all

Sharing a wireless router - can the administrator of the network view my browsing history?

I live in a shared house and several of us connect to the internet via a wireless router. The administrator of the network is connected to the router with a cable (hard-wired, I think it's called). Is he able to see what sites the other users are accessing?

If so, how can we prevent this? Many thanks.|||If he's really into computers and is smart about it, he could theoretically use a Packet Monitor to view stuff. But then again, so could you :) It's just a software you install on your computer that monitors traffic that's going on in the network.

The only thing he could do as an administrator that you can't is deny you access to the network. If it's a shared house and you pay part of the internet bill, then he shouldn't do that.

MLindahl|||You can't, he is the Admin, he can do wahtever he wants in the router setup to monitor anyone using it.

How can I connect a wired printer to my wireless network using a wireless router?

I have a wireless network: a wireless modem connected to a DSL line that connects wirelessly to my computer. My printer has a wired ethernet port. I have a spare router with wireless capability that I could connect to this printer. Without wiring my printer to my modem (they are in different rooms), can I use this router to get my wireless printer to talk to my computer - either via the modem or directly to my wireless card in my compter - whatever is possible. Thanks!|||If you have a network printer you can get adapters that will convert a wired ethernet port in to a wireless solution. You can also get a wireless print server to connect the printer across the network with no PC needed.

Using the advice above, keep in mind the PC that you want to share the printer from must be on at all times or no one will be able to print.|||Yes and No. If you use the spare router with your printer, you will have 2 wireless networks. (Don鈥檛 make the mistake of setting both wireless routers with the same SSID, then nothing will work right.) You could do this, but then you would have to switch between both networks, depending on whether you want to print or be on the internet - pretty klugy and bothersome.

Some routers can act as a relay agent, but it鈥檚 not common. You would have to check the setup options. Your best bet would be to pickup a wireless print server.|||Unless your printer will accept a wireless card it will not work...You can hard wire it to atleast one comptuer and share the printer on the network. Then every computer on the network can print from the same printer...Very easy to set up and you can find it on microsoft website for setting up a network printer...Thanks|||Go to Fry's Electronics store.

And then i baught a lan adaptor and plugged the cord into my modem and still nothing. So can you tell me if my wireless router works for the wii? No WPA2-PSK (TKIP) Nintendo also recommends using channel 1 or 11 for the G wireless.

I'm pretty sure that your router supports WPA2 -PSK (AES). I am also wondering if it costs extra to hook up the wireless router to your internet connection. Thanks!|||1. Any router will work. I personally use a Netgear.

I had a Linksys but it was a piece of slow junk, and my Belkin eventually developed a problem that if you plugged more than two computers into it it crashed.

Apple reportedly makes good routers themselves: the AirPort Express doubles as a music streamer (just plug it into your stereo and crank your music using iTunes - you can even use the Remote app for the Touch with it), the AirPort Extreme can share a printer or USB drive, and the Time Capsule has a built-in hard drive that integrates with Time Capsule if you have a Mac.

Routers not only give you internet on your Touch, but they also let you share your internet connection with other desktops and laptops around your house wirelessly.

and no it does not cost anything extra to hook up your wireless internet except you might have to buy one more ethernet cable depending on how far you put your router away from your computer, because the cable that comes with the router is only 4 or 5 feet long, but there is no extra monthly fee or anything like that

Does a wireless router work with a wired internet modem?

I have Verizon and they gave me a wired modem (which only connects to my computer). They are sending me a free wireless router because I want to have wireless internet available to be able to play Netflix on my tv. Is this going to work?|||Absolutely. I don't often see people who use the modem and connect it directly into the computer; nearly everyone I know (with cable Internet) connects the modem to a wireless router in order to host a wireless network.

In fact, while there is a such thing as a "wireless modem" (which is a modem and router combined into one... Comcast used to provide a Motorola model of these), you will *need* to have a "wired modem" to successfully use and set up a wireless router.

To diagram how this works:

The internet comes form the cable line in your wall, which goes through a cable line to the modem. The modem has one ethernet port on the back, which can be used to connect a computer to the internet. Alternatively, you can plug that into a router and the router can broadcast (and share) the Internet with multiple devices. Most wireless routers will have four wired Ethernet ports on the back, to connect desktop PCs without wireless, and you can connect a great amount of wireless devices as well.|||Yes.

If it is a wireless router (and not a gateway) then you connect the router to the modem.

If it is a wireless router/modem (a gateway) then it replaces the modem.

There should be instructions with the router on how to install it.

If not call Verizon.

How many wireless devices can be connected to a wireless router?

I am searching for a wireless router, but want to know how many wireless devices(laptops) can be connected simultaneously to the router for the internate sharing. Please sugest which router should I purchase for sharing between 3 laptops wirlessly.|||If you are looking for a wireless solution for a large amount of computers then go with a Cisco Wireless Solution. It manages multiple Access Points throughout the building which is easily manageable and secure. If you are looking for something small then go with Linksys. It is the next step to Cisco. The amount of devices depends on the router and the bandwidth. Sure you can connect 50 devices to a wireless router but if they are all on at the same time then it is going to get slower as each device connects. If you have to connect multiple try to keep 20 devices per router. It will help with bandwidth issues and connection problems.|||As many has you want. You router basically sends wireless internet signals for devices that have Wi-Fi or netwoek adapters, such as a PSP, Wii, and of course a laptop.

So, you can connect any amount of wireless devices to the router, but it may slow down your internet if you guys are all using the internet at the same time.|||Well it all depends on the router the linksys one that i have can have as many as i choose because in the settings it has a place where you can say how many you can have connected and could easily handle 3 laptops without question|||Most routers are capable of handling up to 20 wireless connections. a function of the wireless band used prevents any more. It should also be able to handle other wired machines. For your use any router should work.|||ok first off all of them are wrong a wireless router can only hold 6 this is because it only gives out 6 ip address and if you have more there will be a ip conflict but the best one to buy is a Linksys

How to set up a wireless router to your laptop and desktop?

I already have a desktop and a modem (for internet) and I am planning to buy a laptop and wireless router. I have seem videos on how to set up the router and have it connect to your laptop but how can I make it possible so my desktop can still be connected to the internet with the same modem? Also please list anything I might need to do so. Thank you.|||just enter 192.168.1.1 to set up.|||Usually the router will come with step-by-step instructions on how to set up your router and keep your desktop on the same modem.

The router will need to run off of your desktop's internet link with the modem, and then it broadcasts that signal to your laptop and other devices that have wireless capabilities.

Just follow the instructions included in your router when you get it.|||hey jennifer ?

usually if you just buy the router there will be instructions on letting you know

how to set it up. Buy a netgear router

it very point forward, it works properly and performs great, and easy to setup

How to get my laptop to recognise a wireless router?

I have got a wireless router and am able to connect to the internet if the Ethernet cable is connected from the router to the laptop. Once I unplug this I lose internet connection. My laptop apparently has inbuilt wireless features I just don't know how to make it all work!!! Do I have to get another part or set up something on the laptop to make it receive the wireless connection?

Totally Confused|||Some laptops have a switch for your built-in wireless card. For example my Dell Latitude has the switch on the left side that turns on/off the radio. Some laptops use 3rd party wireless configurators, but windows has its own contained in Network Connections in Control Panel.

To connect to an available wireless network

Open Network Connections.

Click the wireless network connection icon, and then, under Network Tasks, click View available wireless networks.

Choose the wireless network from the list that appears, and then click Connect.

If the network is one that supports Wireless Provisioning Services, such as a public wireless network or a corporate network, you might be asked to download additional files that will allow your computer to connect to the network.

If the Web site listed in the dialog box is one that you trust to provide you with this information, click Download. Otherwise, click Cancel and choose a different network to connect to.

Once the files are downloaded (or if they were previously downloaded), follow the instructions in the Wireless Network Registration Wizard.

If the network you choose is security-enabled, one of the following will occur:

If the network key is automatically provided by your network or system administrator (that is, the network supports IEEE 802.1x), the connection will be made automatically.

If the network key is not automatically provided, in Network key, type the key.

To configure other wireless network connection settings, or if you are having difficulty making a connection to the wireless network that you selected, under Related Tasks, click Change advanced settings, select the wireless network that you want to configure, and then click Properties. If the wireless network is not in the list, click Add.

Notes

To open Network Connections, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.

Some wireless networks might not appear on the list. For example, a public Internet service provider (ISP) can be configured to use another provider's wireless network name. In that case, you might see only the public ISP in the list of wireless networks. To show all wireless networks, click Show wireless access point names.

|||If you have a built-in wireless card you should be able to set up a wireless connection. With the ethernet cable plugged in, log onto the internet. Find the website for your routers' manufacturer (Belkin, Linksys, Netgear etc). Once there, you should find instructions on how to set up wireless connectivity. It's really easy and a lot of it is already done for you. If you are asked for a password, it's password (yes, password) and if you're asked for admin it's admin. How easy is that! Once you have done this you should be able to remove the ethernet cable between the router and your computer. Good luck.|||I suspect it doesn't have wireless.

If you go into network settings, it'll tell you how many network cards it has.

If it does have a wireless card, you'll need to give it an IP address similar to the router's internal address (which is likely to be something like 192.168.0.1) so give it something like 192.168.0.3 or 192.168.0.4.

|||Look in your toolbar at the bottom right side of your screen (in windows) and look for the network button by hovering the mouse over the icons until you find it. Then double click and you can figure out the rest.

Btw, next time go with a Mac. You wouldn't be having this problem if you had one. Hope that helps. Peace.|||you have to pair up the laptop with the router so it knows whats what and also don't forget the security code on the router otherwise all and sundry will be downloading from you|||about wireless router can be read in http://wikipediawiki.org/computers-internet/?q=wireless%20router

How do I setup wrt54g wireless router with centurylink dsl?

I have a wrt54g wireless router and for some dumb reason I decided to press the reset button. Well, now it won't connect to the internet and Centurylink and linksys (The makers of the wrt54g) both refuse to help me unless I pay them. Is there anyone that knows how to set this router up so that it will work?|||I have a wrt54g wireless router then now it won't connect to the internet and Centurylink and any link system

How can I prevent my wireless router from interfering with my internet connection?

I have a Linksys wireless router that disconnects from the internet whenever I receive a phone call. It has something to do with the router switching channels, I don't know how to keep it from happening!|||You're using a cordless phone? The phone is interfering with the router. Connect to the router and try changing channels (http://192.168.1.1/Wireless_Basic.asp the 3rd item). Channels 1, 6 and 11 are the ends and middle of the range, so use the one farthest from the current one.

Or you have a DSL internet connection? Make sure that everything plugged into a phone jack - EXCEPT the modem - has a filter on it.

It's almost always one or the other.|||Unfortunately, your phone operates in the 2.4GHz radio frequency range - the exact same frequencies that wireless Ethernet uses.

The best solution is to replace your phone with one that operates in a different frequency range, e.g. 5.8GHz.

WiRELESS ROUTER ??

what do you think is the best brand for a wirless router . i have two computers but in differnent rooms . so i need something so i can have interent in both rooms . thanks =]|||Linksys|||you can use Linksys, Netgear and any number of them, there really isnt much difference between them.

I like Linksys, probably only because I have seen more in work places.|||linksys are cool, but i use belkin. i've had less problems with belkin and they're cheaper.|||Well this depends on how far the computers are apart in each room and how many walls the signal has to pass through to reach the other computer.

Brand wise linksys is a good choice for simplicity and out of the box connectivity. But I would HIGHLY recommend you run the software for it to secure your router and the computer it will be talking to remotely to prevent someone from hijacking your connection.

If you know your computers are going to be far away (i.e. multiple walls and possible metal or electronic interference.) I would recommend you get the antenna upgrade kit they sell for the linksys routers.

Also it might be good to get a wireless repeater to boost the strength of the signal to the other machine without having to put the router in a area that is high traffic or might be kicked a lot (good for if you have a laptop and you want to take it outside or in a back yard for example)|||Linksys, User friendly, easy setup with other linksys products, super range( especially with better antennas), great tech support, easy to update firmware, good firewall options available on some models for added security.|||Linksys - Hands Down !|||They come in all kinds and shapes. You have first to decide on what you need. Should it have a printer server or ADSL modem, LAN connections, firewall, USB port etc. etc.? Should I have asked you which is the best brand for a shampoo, you would of come with a series of questions: hair type, color, washing frequency, conditioner etc. Buying a router is not that different from buying a shampoo; you have to define your problem. Then you go on a site (e.g. thetechzone.com) and read some reports. Linksys. US Robotics, ASUS, Belkin, Netgear etc. all produce hundreds of routers some better than others and some not. When you make a comparison you make sure you have similar products. There is no one here who can decide for you.

How do I get my wireless router to connect to the internet?

I am thinking of buying a wireless router to go with my wired router. If I was to buy it would my ISP automatically connect it to the internet or would I have to alert them.|||actually some isp's are checking the mac address of a router to connect it to an account number if it came with your internet service, a lot of times doing a simple release and renew of the dhcp address given to the router may do the trick but sometimes a phone call is necessary with some internet providers, here is a link to free router help videos,

The solution would be neater have less to go wrong and use less power sockets - it probably cost you no more either. Additionally you would get support for setting it up

If you are In the UK and you wish to get it your self and set it up if you have a cable router i.e. from virgin media the wireless router will automatically be detected - you simply replace the wired router with the wireless.

If you have an ADSL (BT, talk talk tiscali etc) connection you would nea some setup information from your ISP. Is there a wireless router that will record web addresses of users surfing the internet?

Is there a wireless router that will record web addresses of users surfing the internet?

I have a small office and wondering if there is a wireless router that will let me know what websites people are clicking onto?|||Not that I am aware of == you need a 'Proxy server' between the users and the 'real' Internet (which, to be honest, if you are running a Business, you should already have).

NB. I hope your Wireless is secure ?

The wireless router should connect to a 'DMZ' port on your main Internet router (so that there is a firewall between the wireless users and your internal network) - incoming Wireless access should be regarded as just as dangerous as 'raw' internet (hackers, port scanners etc etc)

You should also be running WPA2 encryption plus RADIUS authentication ... (otherwise there is little to stop non-employees using your router to surf the net ... or 'hackers' browsing your internal system looking for 'interesting' files to download - you might think 'I don't have anything of interest' but your employee name / address/ salary and bank details could end up being sold on ebay ...)|||Some routers can be configured to log network activity in this way, and produce usage reports. It would do a 2 or 3 story and I didn't need to do that.

Yours should go to your yard. If you wanted to do something with a longer range to share the internet, then you need to talk to the stores and find a larger router and it should broadcast much farther out. I am not sure a router would work as they are not wireless but need an ethernet cable from the DSL to the router (or modem to router) so you would need an ethernet cable from one router to the other I'd think and you would lose the whole idea of no wires and can't take that from house to house. So I'd think a more powerful router woud do the trick.

I got an easy router to work with, the Valet and I got a small one rather than the larger one. But there re probably some moe powerful that the larger Valet even. Check with the dealers on that first before you get another router and try to hook together. I am not sure it would work, but then I am not terribly electronically talented anymore. That is why I got the valet as it is easy to hook up. We can give a code though for guests which is what you want. That way you can also have it cut off if necessary. Good luck.|||lol

How does a wireless router work?

I'm gonna use a wireless router for my xbox because I have a DSL modem but my xbox is in another room. So does a wireless router have it's own internet in it or would I have to plug it in something?|||A wireless router operates by plugging a base set into the Internet connection, giving web access to the computer. It enables individuals to work online without the need to be connected through wires. It also allows Internet usage through wired connections wherein the desktop is connected to the router via the Ethernet cable. There are many ports on a router which determine the number of computers that can access the Internet through a single broadband connection. A router is a device wherein two or more things can be joined, which connects a single network together. There is an inbuilt modem that connects computers either with one of its cables or without any wires.|||You plug it into the power point.

How do I setup a wireless router with out a wired connection?

My ethernet port on my laptop is not functioning. I bought a wireless modem with the hopes of being able to set up internet access without a port. The instructions are telling me that I need to use a wired connection to set up internet. Is there a way around this? I hae an old desktop in my closet. Can I use this to setup the wireless router?

|||It has to be hardwired to set up the connection.

After that, it doesn't matter, unless it's reset.

You'll need to use the desktop, if only for a few minutes.|||To use the setup CD, you must use a wire. You could pull your desktop out for 5-10 minutes if it has a working network adapter, that would do the job. This is the easiest way.

It is possible on many routers, but NOT recommended. You have to make sure nobody else around has an unsecure network with the same default name because that will make it impossible to set up (your computer will try to switch between the two as you adjust settings - you may accidently reconfigure your neighbor's connection). Assuming you don't have any other networks with the same default name, you can manually configure everything - connect to the wireless (usually it's named with the brand of the router) and go to it's config page. Try http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.2.1 and login will 'admin' or blank for username; and 'admin' 'password' or blank for the password. Then, you need to set the network-name (SSID), wireless security (encryption), administration (system config) password, and try to connect to the internet.|||you can use a wired connection from a wireless router with a LAN cable, there will be a port on the back of the router and connect to laptop just like a phone cable.

Otherwise you will need to buy a wireless dongle for the laptop if the wireless modem is not working.

What is a wireless router and how does it work?

Just recently, my sister ordered a DSL internet service package from a telephone company and she just mentioned to me about getting a wireless router. Would something like that be required for DSL? I also wanted to know what it does. Please explain it to me in great detail. Any answer is very much appreciated.|||"Would something like that be required for DSL?"

This would depend on the device that the Internet service provider (or telephone co.) sends out to you. For example, Verizon offers a modem/wireless router combo..this means that a separate wireless router is generally not necessary.

If the modem that the Internet service provider sends out does not have wireless capability, then you could pick one up for pretty cheap. Here is an exmaple:

Wireless router?

i just bought a wireless router but never put a password, now some one in my are has done that and I cant log on to my own wireless..How should i resett the pass word|||Check the manual, but the basic thing is to reset it. This is normally via the pinhole switch on the back. The actual routine varies. Sometimes you need to power up with the switch held, others you hold it for several seconds, some you press it multiple times. When you have done this connect to it via a cable, immediately go to the admin section and set an admin password. This must be done before you do anything else, or the pirate user will get in and upset it before you can set up the connection. You then need to set the ISP login information again. Then set encryption. You really should have done this before, someone could be using it to send thousands of porn emails tracing back to your site, and without encryption any wireless sniffer could see ALL your traffic.|||you mean the encryption key? log in to the router using the IP Address in the browser. its probably 192.168.1.1, if not then go to Start %26gt; Run %26gt; type CMD, then from the command line type IPCONFIG /ALL and get the default gateway IP and use that. It will ask you for a password, its usually admin / admin by default, if not let me know what kind of router and i can look it up.

If this is the password you were referring to then you'll need to reset the router to clear it or set it back to the default|||After you've taken back your router with the Reset button (sometimes it's a hole for a paperclip to be poked into), make sure you keep it with these steps:

1.FROM A COMPUTER CONNECTED TO THE ROUTER WITH AN ETHERNET CABLE ONLY, log into your router's admin pages from your browser.

2.Find the page that controls wireless access to the admin pages and deactivate it. Make it so someone has to be sitting next to the router with a computer and an Ethernet cable connecting them to control it.

3.Find the page in the router's admin pages that defines the SSID (essentially, the network name).

4.Change it (you'll have to change it in all your machines also) so it's not using the default for your router.

5.Turn off SSID Broadcasting so the router doesn't announce it to the world. You're not running a hotspot and all your machines should know the SSID.

6.Find out how to install a network (WEP or WPA) key (not a login password) for your router, do so and set it up there and on all your machines. I suggest copying-and-pasting it (there may be four) into a Notepad or Wordpad document so you can accurately copy-and-paste it to your machines.

That should throw most interlopers off and keep them from coming back.|||If you're not able to log in using the default username and password, such as admin/admin (Also check the user manual for your router as the username and password may be different) you should be able to perform a hard reset on the router.

If you look on the back or bottom of the router, you should see a reset button. Press and hold the reset button for about 30 seconds. This will normally reset the router to it's original configuration, allowing you to login again using the default username and password.|||Either get the book out or go online and download it. It will tell you the hard reset process, this will reset it to the factory settings.

Go back to the shop where you bought it and ask if it will work for a MAC as well as shop assistants are rather unhelpful unless you ask them|||It's probably an operator error?

Wireless Router?

I use Time Warner Digital phone, internet and Digital cable. Can I connect a Linksys 802.11g Wireless Router to give access to the internet to my broyfriend's laptop? I connect mine with cable.|||Yes. The Linksys Router would plug into your cable modem instead of your computer. Your computer would then plug into the Router. You can think of the router as essentially a splitter box for the internet connection coming from the cable modem.

To set this up, there should be one cable coming from the cable modem to the port labeled "Uplink" on the Linksys Router. Then, another cable from your computer to the port labeled "1" on the Linksys Router.

You may need to do some configuration on the Linksys Router to allow it to connect properly with the cable modem. Check the documentation that comes with the router - it will explain any necessary steps (Linksys generally supplies good documentation.)|||Yes, connect ethernet from modem into router, and then out to your computer|||Yes if he has a wireless network card, you will need to connect to the internet through the router. All software etc should come with it, just set it up and follow the intructions, most wireless routers come with at least 1 USB card. if not you can use an ethernet cable to connect them.

Wireless Router?

I'm thinking about buying a wireless router. Are they hard to install? Give me the steps.|||They are not hard to install at all, and the best way to install one is to follow the step by step install guide that comes with the router.

1) Connect the Broadband Modem to the wall connection

2) Connect a ethernet cable from the broadband modem to the WAN (Internet) port of the router

3) Connect a ethernet cable from one of the routers ethernet ports to a computers ethernet port

4) Log into the routers configuration page by opening a browser and typing the routers IP address

5) Configure the Internet Connection settings in the router for your ISP (Usually Cable Internet is a Dynamic IP and a DSL Internet is a PPPOE)

6) If its a wireless router turn on the wireless capabilities, name the SSID and set the security you want and make sure DHCP is enabled.

That should be it.......|||If you are a beginner, you can usually follow along with the install CD if you buy like a linksys for example. The install cd has a step by step guide and once you are done with each step, you click next then it goes to the next page of instructions.|||No, it's quite easy because it's just plug-and-play but you must know plugging what to what. Normally the unit comes with some sort of user's manual in the box. Just follow the instructions. The manual also shows you how to configure the router to install extra features but this is only necessary if you want to secure your home wireless network.|||Most of them just plug them into your dsl/cable/satellite modem and you are off to the races. However, you should read the manual so you can harden your security. I would either get a Linksys or Netgear router.|||Quite simple. A newbie can easily follow it with the instructions and CDs thatz provided with a new router. However, there are certain entries that you would be required to collect from your ISP, depending on the connection that you have to your Internet. The required questions that are needed to known from your ISP can be obtained from the manuals.

So, have a read thru the manuals. Get the necessary info, if any and then you are all set to configure the router.

Just rememeber to put a password to your wireless network after configuring, so that others do not party with your wireless network.

Wireless router?

Here is whats up, I believe the term wireless router is incorrect, infact I believe it is a switch, not a router. As far as my networking knowledge is, a switch connects computers, and then a switch connects to a router, so how can a router connect to a computer. Thanks if you know which it is.|||It routes your computer to the Internet/network.|||You can connect computers to routers, thousands of people do this. A wireless router has inbuilt routing ability or it could not differentiate the packets across the network boundary. An access point is a pure switch with no routing ability.|||A switch sends frames within a single network. A router sends packets between networks. Routers are more intelligent than switches. In terms of wireless, yes, some say that a wireless router is roughly equivalent to a wired switch. The use of "router" indicates that the device itself can be used as a wired router without the wireless functionality.|||and the knee is connected to the thigh bone. yes wireless router is incorrect when it can use ethernet cables as well. A switch is a dumb router, ie not programable, and is not wireless cause its dumb. the programable router is more versatile, has the switch built in. can be used as wireless or cable.|||The term Wireless router is correct.

A switch moves data from computer A to computer B by reading the header on the packet and switching the packet to the correct destination

A router controls a network. It assigns each computer on the subnet an IP address using DHCP. It connects multiple computers on the subnet to a single higher network IP address using NAT. A router can also switch data between computers on the subnet, and act as a switch, but a switch cannot act as a router.

A wireless router simply has an additional transmitter/ receiver section that allows it to work wirelessly rather than through cables

A wireless switch is called a wireless Access Point

what is a wireless router? i have an xbox box 360 and i need to buy one and a wireless adapter. i no which adapter to buy but i dont no which router to get. also i dont no what a router is and what it used for, for the xbox 360.|||a wireless router is a device that is connected to ur modem and makes ur connection wireless or wired becuase it has 4 ethernet ports on the back and if your gonna look for a wireless router for your xbox 360 and the 360 wireless adapter. you should try this and buy the wireless router that is supported for the 360.|||A wireless router is what you connect to your subscribed broadband connection to get internet access wirelessly.|||The answer above is entirely correct. However, I would imagine that you're still a bit confused.

You can get a wireless router from your internet service provider (usually) or you could buy one yourself. I suggest something like Linksys, which is easily found at your local radioshack. The directions that come with the router are pretty straight-forward, even for the least tech-savvy. :)

The router enables you to connect to xbox LIVE, which means that youll be able to connect with other people from around the world. It basically connects your xbox device to the internet, where you can communicate and play games with others.

Hope that helps!

Wireless router?

is there a router or someting that can recieve wireless ineternet and then you can use that internet that it recieved wirelessly to spilt into ethernet ports. i want to do this because i have a wireless router and it is far away from my xbox 360 so when i have friends over we cant play online bc they dont have wireless adapters and their cords arent long enough. thanks|||You need to be within range in order to pick up the signal.|||I have a wireless linksys router, that I plug my cable modem into, it also has 5 ports to plug into, I have a 10 foot cable I plug into xbox and run to router...|||This sounds like what you're looking for. Just plug it into an outlet and it'll receive the wireless signal from your router. It has four ethernet ports.

Wireless router?

My neighboor has a wireless internet connection (WiFi) for his internet cafe business due to unavailability of telephone connections in our locale. A small antenna is used to receive signal from the network provider and feed signal to his computer network. A friend advised me that I can also access the connection by using a router connected to my own PC. Is there any limitations for this? Is distance a factor in accessing the nearby signal? What will be the factors to consider so that I can successfully share the wireless connections? thanks|||If your close enough you can get a signal, yes you can, if they find out you could get into serious trouble.............|||You have a distance factor that effects your signal. if your too far away then you wont get a good signal. If it is password protected you would need that password it may not be though. But this is highly illegal............. your basicly gettong free internet connections.you will also need a wireless card installed into your comp.|||Your friend if generous enough could set-up a wireless access point or wireless router and allow you to share his connection for free.

This is not illegal because you are getting the signal from his router/access point and not from the WiFi service provider (unless the WiFi provider says it is illegal to share connection).

You would need a wireless adapter (PCI for PC and PC Card or USB for laptops) if your computer does not have one yet to access the wireless router/access point of your friend.

The connection speed and signal strength depend how far your pc from your friend's wireless router and your friend's router coverage. Some routers can service from 100 meters (normal range) up to 800 meters (extended range) in open space.

You can use an extender or repeater to boost the signal. Some access points could be configured as repeater to do this.

I have a D-Link wireless router that's connected to my Airport on my Mac and it works fine but it makes my Internet connection very slow. I would like to know if there is something i can do without purchasing a new router.|||Try getting the latest version of firmware for your router. IF you only have wireless G clients on your network then set the wireless parameters so it only supports G.|||D-Link wouldn't be my choice of Router.

Either Airport Extreme Base or Netgear.

D-Link and Link Sys are not as stable

i live in a apartment. my grandparents live upstairs, on the second floor, i live on the first floor. tell me the best wireless router that will work if i use my laptop at my grandparents house. the wireless router has to be in my room.

they live on top of me, to the right about 25 feet. please tell me the BEST one under a $100, because yesterday i pruchased one, and tried it out, but i couldn't get reception at my grandparents house|||Since you already purchased a wireless router I would suggest you purchase a high gain omni directional antenna and connect it to your router.

Then place the antenna as high as you can and closest to your grandparents direction.

Then you want to angle the antenna a little since the RF waves do not go up but do radiate out from the antenna.

Also if your router lets you control the radio power settings change it to the max.......|||i'm upstairs i just got a lynxis from target it rocks|||If your apartment building has concrete floors, there's no way that you're going to get a signal through them.

I have verison DSL. If I want to buy a wireless router and don't have one yet do I have to change verison DSL and get verison FIOS? Can I just get a wireless router and not change internet provider?? Thanx 4 helping :%26lt; )|||You do not have to change your ISP. If your DSL modem has a ethernet connection then purchase a wireless router that is in your budget, and wirless adapters for whatever computers you want to connect wirelessly and thats it.

Just follow the simple instructions on how to setup the router with a DSL connection and you should have no problem...|||I think you can I did.|||Yes, what you'll do is get a wireless router and connect it to your DSL modem.|||No, you can use any wireless router.|||Your wireless router has nothing to do with your ISP. You can use a wireless router with any Internet connection, or even with no Internet connection at all.

is there a wireless router that you can connect to through your cellphone while your cellphone is plugged into the usb port on your laptop?,and where the wireless router sends a signal back to your laptop that will enable broadband?i already use my cellphone when i take my laptop with me somewhere, and theres no other wireless connections around, but its mad slow 'cause its just a dial up connection.|||that is too complex of a solution to connect to the internet from home. why make it so difficult? Are you paying for data via the cell but don't want to pay for high speed access at home?

Or, if you just want to connect your laptop to a home network, then why not buy a wireless card for the laptop that connects to a wireless router?

KISS (no, i'm not making a pass at you)|||Buy an EDGECard for your laptop, it is made for the Laptop and a lot cheaper to use....

Other than that, find a local wireless access point at a coffee shop somewhere to use and save you cellphone bill man!

Wireless router?

have just purchased am EDIMAX wireless router and wireless usb adapter. not being very computer literate do i just plug in the wireless router to my phone point the usb adapter into my computer and then will it just connect|||plug in the router

then run the software which will tell you when to plug in the USB and then follow all the onscreen instructions and that's it.

Once you are all set up and working don't forget to change the password otherwise half the street will be using your connection :)

.|||plug the usb wireless adapter into your computer, and plug the router/hub into the phone line and to a mains plugin (if needed) then use the wireless set up wizard in Windows, and away you got. if you have any problems, contact the manufacturer.|||Bo it has to be set up.

First it has to be a broadband connection - you say phone line . I am assuming that you have dsl

The router connects to the dsl modem

You need your account info for the dsl to set it up.

If you do not know phone the dsl company

Next when you set up the router you may want to turn on wireless security ( wep 64 easiest) . You do that in the same place.

There may be a setup disc that came with the router

or at least a manual with instructions.

If you can when you set up the router change the channel - from the default channel of 6 to first 1 or 11

This will save you from 95 % of the problems - usually a neighbours router also taken out of the box.

I would suggest that you leave the wireless security off when you first set up the router until you are familiar with the setup process. Rules out one variable.

60 % of wireless routers do not their securuty on ( i.e are open) There will be no shortage of other victims in your neighborhood.

Next is the wireless card set up in your 2nd computer.

If it is not put the install disc in the cd/dvd

After the computer has booted and is running windows plug in the usb adapter and let it install.

Again if you are having troubles call tech support

Once that is all done - it is a simple procedure to connect

- on your tray in the right hand side of your windows desktop find the wireless utility icon

Right click on it

Scan

Select and connect your signal ( there may be others from your neighbours that you can or cannot see)

If you have encryption off it should connect

If you have encryption on it should ask you for the key

( you generally enter it twice just like a password)

the wep is usually generated with a phrase - code generator in the control panel of the router somewhere around the page where you set up the wireless security ( wep 64 is the easiest at this point in your career)

Make sure the router is high , not cluttered and not blocked in path by metal or large heavy objects. Do not put it on the floor or under a metal desk.. I had a complete idiot named Kirk do that.I If needed move the router over a foot or two. Can make a big diffirence.

The major problems are fixed by changing the channel and entering the wrong wep code

This is a very usefull program

If you have problems it will help you in plain english

http://www.networkmagic.com/nmlp/home-ne鈥?/a>

if you have problems it is most are solved by changing the channel or making sure that you have the correct wep key.

I see that you have a matching set of router and wireless usb network card. Good. Easier setup. Faster speed and tech support can not blame the other vendor's product if you have trouble.

Lastly if you can get a usb extension and place the usb adapter up and away high from the computer good. Best not to have it directly plugged into the computer at the back. Shielded by metal case of computer and may get damaged if computer is moved during cleaning.

I have a D-link (802.11g/2.4GHz) wireless router which i didnt set up. Its my sisters and conected to her comp, she uses this little usb thing to connect to it. I dont want to ask her so can someoen recomend what i have to do to put wireless internet on my new computer and the cost of the usb thing. Thanks|||you can purchase a wireless usb NIC for about 50-80$.. normally the router would give you an IP address but it may also be setup as static, also you may have a problem if there is a WEPkey on the wireless network, which means u need a password or a key to connect to the network..|||If ur computer is a laptop/notebook it should have wireless lan. If you do have a laptop then go to ur task bar and look for a computer with either an x or some waves. click on it and it should show the wireless networks look for the network with the most green bars(the green bars mean how close the router is to your laptop) click on it the a popup should come up wait for about 1 minute then it should be conected.

For a desktop/computer you would need to buy the usb wireless card then hook it up to ur computer and install it. after its conected to ur computer do the same thing as for the laptop. go to the task bar ect..

I have heard about something called Wireless Router. Is it the same as wireless internet connection?|||You need a wireless router to have a wireless internet connection.|||well to start off you would need a wireless router...there are many kinds linksys and belkin and so on den which after you can excess the internet through wireless connection which means you can have more computers online|||a wireless router 'routes' the internet connection to your computer. you need a router in order to have a wireless internet connection. If your school has wireless internet connectivity then there is a router somewhere but unless you are talking about laptops, the computers are most likely connected to the internet through a network.|||No wireless internet is not the samething as a Wireless Router. Wireless internet is connecting to the internet without a ethernet cable. A wireless router is basically a small, low-powered computer dedicated to nothing but providing Internet access to your wireless network.

Wireless router?

i have a question about wireless routers. there are two laptops in my house and a desktop. how does the router work, do you just take it outta the box and turn it on and then the computers are connected? and i dont know about the desktop, how would the desktop run off of the router? do the wireless routers come with outlets to plug ethernet cords in them for desktops. i wanna get one but i dont know what else i may or may not have to also buy with it|||First get a linksys wireless g 4 port router its the easyest to set up, desktop plugs in the back with a ethernet cable (it does not turn the router off), the laptop will connect wirelessly

The router will only work if you have high speed internet (no dial up).

Make sure u change the password of the router so that others do not go in and change the settings.|||Most wireless routers do have some connections for wired machines. Usually 4 or so. A router just goes between the modem and your machines and "routes" internet traffic as needed. They all come with a setup guide to get your started.

Basically all you do is log in to the routers setup page (use a web browser from a wired machine) setup the connection type for cable, dsl, etc. Setup your wireless -- you need to enter an SSID (which identifies your router make it whatever you want dont keep the default) enter an encryption key (dont run without it!) and then connect all your laptops using the wireless adapters (hopefully already with the laptops. if not you will need a couple)|||i know that you can connect the wireless router to your desktop via a wired connection and make the settings from the desktop. then as long as the signal is up you can use the wireles adapters in the laptops to connect them to the network.|||The routers work by directing the signal from your cable modem or dsl line and distributing to your computers. They usually have 4 ethernet plugs and wireless signal as well. Depending on how close the two desktops are you can plug them directly into the router and it will work out of the box. The only tricky part is when you want to use the wireless as that takes a little bit more to setup but the guides they give you work very well. If the desktops are further apart I would suggest you buy a wireless card for one of them the best bet is to get the same brand as the router so they speak with eachother better. Naturally you can run your laptop from either the wired port or connect wirelessly. I have the same type of set up at home. 1 desktop wired to the router, one wireless and the laptop wireless too. Hope this helps|||Follow the link below.

This is a great tutorial and one that I've used in the past.|||this may be good also....

Wireless router?

I have broadband just normal 256 broadband and I have a normal router but I need a new router so I was wondering will a wireless router work, whats the diffrence between a router and a wireless one?|||Basically, a "wired" router requires wires for you to connect PCs to each other or create an internet connection. But with wireless router (which means it is wi-fi capabled), you can connect to it wirelessly as long as you have a wi-fi enabled desktop or laptop.|||A wireless router would work perfectly on a 256 broadband. The difference is that with a wireless router, you can take your laptop anywhere in your house/office %26amp; you would have internet connectvity. However if you have a desktop %26amp; you want to use your wireless router with a desktop, then it would work but would not make sense. This is because wireless routers are mainly taken for mobility.|||A wired router is just that. Wired from modem to router to cumputer. A wireless is wired from modem to router and sent over the air to your wireless card . This way you have more options to place your computer without worrying about how your going to wire it and if its a laptop mobility. You should be aware that walls ,floors and distance make a differance in the speed of downloading and uploading .From 50 mbs to 0, or no signal at all. Wired is most often trully twice as fast; starting at 100 mbs and faster for the expensive models. If your on at%26amp;t dsl purchase the two wire. It's both wire and wireless and most any wireless card will work with it/

Wireless router=?

My roommate has high speed sympatico connection for his 5-yr. old Sony Vaio desktop. I'm 2 floors above him looking to connect to the internet wirelessly. What should I buy? I've been told to buy a 'wireless router' that would connect to his computer. He does have a 'wireless network setup wizard' on his computer so I assume his comp. isn't too old for this kind of piggybacking arrangement. Any general suggestions, or recommendations as to what I kind of routers are good?|||Try to get one that you can detach the antenna from, so that you can attach an external antenna to it. Since you are two floors away, attaching a directional antenna would help. Aside from that, any of the home routers are good (Netgear, Airlink, etc.) - but of course get at least the 801.11g type, not the 802.11b.

I presume you realize that you need to place this router down by his high-speed modem, like this:

internet--%26gt;modem--%26gt;router--%26gt;computers

So on your computer you will also need to add wireless capability if you don't already have it. So, in ADDITION to the router you need to buy either a card you install n the computer, or else a USB adaptor that you plug into one of the external USB ports on your computer.|||A router really has nothing to do with the computer, so you should not worry about compatability issues. A router is a stand alone device that does not require and software interaction.

This will be your physical connection:

-Cable from the wall to your broadband modem

-Ethernet cable from your broadband modem to the WAN Port of the wireless router

-Ethernet Cable from the routers Ethernet Port #1 to your roommates computers ethernet port

-Install the wireless Adapter in your computer

Now two floors is alot for a wireless signal to get to so if you have problems getting a signal to your computer then purchase a high gain directional antenna and point it in your computers direction.

Wireless Router?

We have a desktop computer upstairs and a laptop downstairs. The cable from Virgin Media runs directly upstairs into the external modem. If the missus is working on the desktop upstairs and I want to search the internet downstairs , do I need a wireless router and what programmes do I need to enable my Laptop to read the wireless router. Any recommendations anyone.|||Yes a wireless router is needed along with a PCMCIA "wireless" card or USB adapter for the laptop. If you right-click on MY COMPUTER, then left-click on PROPERTIES, then go into HARDWARE TAB, then DEVICE MANAGER, scroll down the list to NETWORK ADAPTERS, left click on the (+) symbol and see if it lists a "wireless lan adapter" already installed. If so, nothing further is needed to be done to the laptop.

Make sure you buy a good wireless ROUTER that is EASY to configure. LINKSYS (by cisco) is about the worst for the home consumer. I would recomment BELKIN as my top choice (their wireless G system reaches at least 400ft.) and DLINK as my second choice. It's not that LINKSYS is a bad brand, but they are a little difficult to configure and if you play "online" games or use "chat" programs with "cams", you will sometimes encounter problems due to (too much security) with the router. Both the other brands are secure enough for your home environment use, and if you wish you can password protect and "encrypt" the signal also through it's software.

I realize you are not too tech savvy so here is what you asked for SIMPLY! LOL

Here is the site with the product I have and mentioned. There is a LIFETIME WARRANTY on this product and the CD-ROM will set it up in under 3 minutes for you AUTOMATICALLY. The USB adapters for your laptop are on this page also towards the upper right hand side. NO NEED TO MANUALLY CONFIGURE "ANYTHING" BUT PASSWORD FOR ENCRYPTION!

Click on CONTACT US tab at top of site for the "online" link for european orders!|||Yeah, you will need a wireless router and a wireless card for you laptop. There is a possibility it already has one built in. I would go to a reputable electronics store and tell them you need a wireless router and that you aren't sure if your computer has a wireless card or not. They should be able to help you.|||If your router is wireless then you need to make sure you laptop can detect and access the wireless signal it outputs. This means you need some form of either USB wireless adapter or a card based wireless adapter. I personally would suggest using the USB ones as they allow for easy movement and adjustement to find the best signal.

The adapter you buy should come with software, but note if you are running either vista or Windows XP then they have there own built in programme. I am not sure on this for the older versions. However most adapters have software you can use!

I suggest greatly that you buy an adapter the same make as your router. If your in doubt as to where to purchase it from check the router manufacturers website for help! Or try Argos for some simpler ones, PC world or a website such as ebuyer.

I hope that has cleared it up for you.

Adam|||i recommend getting the apple airport extreme or airport express,

i had a linksys router and it never worked properly(dont know was it the router or my phone line or what) but this is working perfectly now,

airport also lets you print from your laptop to the printer wirelessly, connect an external hard drive, or any usb device really to the laptop(all wirelessly through a usb port on the router).

you need a wireless card for your laptop(if its not built in), these are pretty cheat n easy to install|||i use linksys wireless g router. you can buy the router that hooks into the cable and then you get a wireless reciever for the laptop. bought from walmart for around $90 total.|||If your laptop does not have wireless software it obviously does not have a wireless card. You will need one of these first.|||To enable more than one user to access the internet simultaneously you need a router.

The modem's wan port plugs into the router WAN port. Because you have a dynamic IP from your ISP, the router wan port must be configured for a dynamic ip and most come preconfigured for that.

The router has at least 1 LAN port. Many have up to 4. If you have more LAN devices that you wish to connect via wired connection than you have LAN ports in the router, you will also need a network switch. With a network switch, you connect router LAN port to network switch along with LAN devices.

For wired LAN devices, all connections are made via CAT5 cable. Many people either don't know how to run the cable or don't want to do so and they prefer a wireles router.

A wireless router actually is a hybrid wired and wireless device in that it has wired LAN ports as well as wireless ability.

While wireless appears easier to install, you have to concern yourself with security and must install all the security the router can provide or hackers will get in. Configuring security is time consuming and frustrating so many just don't do it. At some time they reget their failure to install security.

Now for the particulars

Wired Connections - You need a network adapter on each pc you wish to connect. Most come with these built in; older pcs require a pci card added to achieve this. You should configure the connection to accept a dynamic IP address.

Wireless Connection - You need a wireless network adapter on each pc you wish to connect. Some notebooks come with a built in wireless adapter, some to not. Desk tops usually do not come with wireless built in. As with wired, yoiu should configure the connection to accept a dynamic IP address.

Router LAN configuration - you should configure the router to provide LAN IP addresses via DHCP. This gives LAN IP addresses to the LAN pcs.

Router Wireless configuration - you should, in addition of all the LAN config above, turn on the wireless capability, assign a new ssid, change the router password and user name if user can be altered, and invoke all security. I prefer WPA and a preshared key that is long and a mix of upper and lower case letters and numbers. Enable MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of all wireless network adapters you want on your pc and all should work.

Whenever addressing your router, always use a wired port.

I suggest you first get the wired ports up and working; then address the wireless ones.

Finally, there are several household units made by Linksys, Netgear, Belkin, D Link, etc that are inexpensive. Many like them and report decent performance. For home use where no VPN is needed to reside on the router (which is your case) I prefer 3Com and not their bottom of the line models because they are more stable, more reliable, and more hacker resistant than the low end models.

Manuals for routers, like manuals for anything else are fair but not great. Be patient, do one thing at a time, and you most likely can persevere through this.

Whether wired is better than wireless is something only you can determine.
