Wireless router?

have just purchased am EDIMAX wireless router and wireless usb adapter. not being very computer literate do i just plug in the wireless router to my phone point the usb adapter into my computer and then will it just connect|||plug in the router


then run the software which will tell you when to plug in the USB and then follow all the onscreen instructions and that's it.





Once you are all set up and working don't forget to change the password otherwise half the street will be using your connection :)








.|||plug the usb wireless adapter into your computer, and plug the router/hub into the phone line and to a mains plugin (if needed) then use the wireless set up wizard in Windows, and away you got. if you have any problems, contact the manufacturer.|||Bo it has to be set up.


First it has to be a broadband connection - you say phone line . I am assuming that you have dsl


The router connects to the dsl modem


You need your account info for the dsl to set it up.


If you do not know phone the dsl company


Next when you set up the router you may want to turn on wireless security ( wep 64 easiest) . You do that in the same place.


There may be a setup disc that came with the router


or at least a manual with instructions.


If you can when you set up the router change the channel - from the default channel of 6 to first 1 or 11


This will save you from 95 % of the problems - usually a neighbours router also taken out of the box.


I would suggest that you leave the wireless security off when you first set up the router until you are familiar with the setup process. Rules out one variable.


60 % of wireless routers do not their securuty on ( i.e are open) There will be no shortage of other victims in your neighborhood.


Next is the wireless card set up in your 2nd computer.


If it is not put the install disc in the cd/dvd


After the computer has booted and is running windows plug in the usb adapter and let it install.


Again if you are having troubles call tech support





Once that is all done - it is a simple procedure to connect





- on your tray in the right hand side of your windows desktop find the wireless utility icon


Right click on it


Scan


Select and connect your signal ( there may be others from your neighbours that you can or cannot see)


If you have encryption off it should connect


If you have encryption on it should ask you for the key


( you generally enter it twice just like a password)





the wep is usually generated with a phrase - code generator in the control panel of the router somewhere around the page where you set up the wireless security ( wep 64 is the easiest at this point in your career)





Make sure the router is high , not cluttered and not blocked in path by metal or large heavy objects. Do not put it on the floor or under a metal desk.. I had a complete idiot named Kirk do that.I If needed move the router over a foot or two. Can make a big diffirence.





The major problems are fixed by changing the channel and entering the wrong wep code

if you have problems it is most are solved by changing the channel or making sure that you have the correct wep key.





I see that you have a matching set of router and wireless usb network card. Good. Easier setup. Faster speed and tech support can not blame the other vendor's product if you have trouble.


Lastly if you can get a usb extension and place the usb adapter up and away high from the computer good. Best not to have it directly plugged into the computer at the back. Shielded by metal case of computer and may get damaged if computer is moved during cleaning.
