Does a wireless router need to be connected to a wired router?

I'm trying to get the optimum internet setup in my home and I just don't know how to. At the moment I have a fairly rubbish wired router connected to a fairly rubbish wireless router. I'm getting a new wireless router soon, so do I also need to change the wired router to get the best out of the wireless router? Or can I just have the wireless router?|||Just the wireless router. Unless you have a good reason to get a new router, don't get one. If you do online gaming where you need to prioritize traffic, then you might want to get a gaming router. Don't confuse a Modem for a router. You need a modem. It provides the Internet signal from your ISP.|||how it works is that your ISP would usually send you a modem or have you buy one.
