What direction does a wireless router broadcast its signal?

I am trying to reposition the wireless router in my house to increase the signal strength through out the house. I have been told by some people to put the router downstairs because the signal goes up and others have told me to put the router upstairs because the signal projected down mostly.|||The signal goes in all direction. For the best signal try getting your router in the centre of your house, making all rooms accessible.|||the signal goes horizontally at the level you are seeking. you can get another router if this router gives a weak signal.





Upstairs is better than downstairs but still accessing it from downstairs will give a weak signal|||The signal is omni-directional. Think of it as a large sphere.
